Behold: These aerial photos make the Texas Water Safari look like a tranquil river outing. It is not.

Less than 24 hours into Texas Water Safari 2015, team 150 — the Texas Flood — leads the pack of 71 paddlers still in contention for the raw 265-mile river race from San Marcos to Seadrift. Six teams have dropped out starting at mile 45 near Luling.

Austin software engineer drowns while training for Texas Water Safari

A 30-year-old Austin man training for the Texas Water Safari drowned Sunday afternoon in the rain-swollen San Marcos River near the Martindale Dam.

A Dripping Springs man competing in the grueling 280-mile Texas Water Safari died in a San Antonio hospital today where he had been airlifted from the Guadalupe River south of Gonzales.
