As the decade drew to a close, Hays County families were still in the Great Depression’s tight grip. In 1939 and 1940, prolific documentary photographer Russell Werner Lee passed through San Marcos during a tour of Texas and the U.S. Southwest. Here’s what he — and his camera — saw.
