The filing period for candidates interested in running for San Marcos City Council in the Nov. 8 general and special election officially begins on Saturday, July 23 and will continue until Monday, Aug. 22.
The city clerk’s office is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept candidate filings. (The clerk’s office is closed during the lunch hour from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Prospective candidates can pick up a candidate packet at the clerk’s office in San Marcos City Hall or download the forms from the city website here.
Voters will elect a new mayor and three council members: in Place 1, currently held by Lisa Prewitt; in Place 2, currently held by Jude Prather; and in Place 3, currently held by John Thomaides, who is running for mayor.
Under the City Charter, the mayor serves two-year terms and council members serve three-year staggered terms. All council members are elected at-large.
The city council is expected to formally call the election at its Aug. 16 meeting. The city election is held in conjunction with the county, state and federal general elections.
