FROM SUBMITTED REPORTS
San Marcos firefighters stopped a fire on the second-floor balcony of Days Inn early Sunday morning in San Marcos before it could spread to other parts of the hotel.
Firefighters were dispatched to the hotel, located at 1005 N. Interstate 35, at 11:38 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 and arrived at 11:43 p.m. One of the exterior pillars on the second floor was on fire, and the responding firefighters began a fast attack on the fire from outside the building.
The flames were knocked down at 11:49 p.m., and the last hot spots were out at 12:24 a.m. Sunday morning.
The fire displaced all of the occupants of the hotel, which was booked to capacity. Firefighters from two fire stations searched the hotel and found nobody in need of rescue.
There were no injuries, but the fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the hotel and heavily damaged two rooms on the second floor.
The San Marcos Police Department, the San Marcos Fire Department, and the San Marcos/Hays County EMS responded to the fire. SMFD received mutual aid at the scene from the Kyle Fire Department, and units from the New Braunfels Fire Department were on standby to provide additional aid if needed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
