Shopping hordes to close I-35 ramps for tax-free weekend at San Marcos outlets

The northbound McCarty Lane exit ramp and southbound Centerpoint Road exit ramp will be closed 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 to accommodate increased traffic at the outlet malls during tax-free weekend.

Police officers will direct traffic during the closures, and dynamic signs on the interstate will notify motorists of the closed exit ramps.

The purpose of these ramp closures is to prevent traffic from backing onto the Interstate 35 main lanes. Before the city began this tax-free weekend traffic control plan almost 10 years ago, traffic would back up on IH-35 and create serious mobility issues, city spokesperson Melissa Millecam said.

During tax-free weekend, shoppers do not pay state, city or county sales tax on school supplies and clothing priced under $100 per article. For complete lists of exempt and non-exempt consumer products, visit the Texas Comptroller’s website here. The tax holiday runs Aug. 8-10.
