Last call for committee members to shape new land development code

The city of San Marcos has set a deadline of June 20 for applications for an advisory committee to assist with the CodeSMTX project, a far-reaching overhaul of the city’s Land Development Code.

At its July 1 meeting, the San Marcos City Council will make appointments to the committee, which will work to create a code that implements Vision San Marcos, the City’s comprehensive plan.

There is no requirement for residence within the City to participate on the seven-member committee, but applicants must describe their vested interest in the City of San Marcos. Committee members will be appointed by the City Council and should possess one or more of the following professional background qualifications:

  • Engineering and transportation
  • Environmental and natural science
  • Planning, architecture and land use
  • Neighborhood representative and historic preservationist
  • Local business owner
  • Builder and construction
  • Real estate professional, land use law and economic development

“CodeSMTX will be a fun and inclusive process,” said John Foreman, Planning Manager for the City of San Marcos. “There will be many chances for the public to participate in unique and meaningful ways.”

City Council approved a contract with Dover Kohl, a consultant who will work on the project.  The committee will work with the Development Services Department and Dover Kohl to create a graphics-based and user-friendly code that retains many proven code elements, so that the public, design professionals and developers can easily access information and understand how the code affects their neighborhoods or projects.

Interested individuals may download an application from or pick up a hard copy from the Planning office, on the second floor of the municipal building. Completed applications should be returned to the city clerk’s office in City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins St.
