San Marcos CISD officials will break ground today on a new pre-kindergarten campus at the site of the now-demolished old Bowie Elementary School.
The new campus is designed to accommodate 600 students in anticipation of an expansion of the school district’s pre-kindergarten and Head Start programs, currently housed at Hernandez Intermediate. In May 2013, voters approved two bond packages totaling including $12.7 million designated for construction of the pre-kindergarten center.
The facility will include 27 classrooms, special education classrooms, computer labs, a music room, activity room and library. The former elementary school’s cafeteria will be renovated to serve the new campus.
School district trustees awarded an $11,656,352 construction contract to San Antonio-based Joeris General Contractors Ltd, said Jason Gossett, the school district’s assistant superintendent for business and support services.
Construction was originally scheduled to start in October last year and be substantially complete by July 2014, in time for the new academic year. With the late start, the pre-kindergarten center is now projected to be a ready for students sometime in December, Gossett said.
