The Texas State baseball team made a bid for a ninth inning comeback against Rice Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark, but came up just short in a 5-4 loss.
Trailing, 5-3, going to the bottom of the ninth, the Bobcats brought the tying run to the plate when Garrett Mattlage led off with a single. Mattlage took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground ball by Cory Geisler and scored on a ground ball by Ben McElroy. At that point, the Bobcats had two out and no one on, down 5-4, but Tyler Pearson then hit a double to bring the tying run back to the batter’s box. But Colby Targun grounded out, ending the game.
Rice took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and held onto it until the fourth, when the Bobcats tied it with three runs. Nick Smelser’s single through the right side drove in the last two of those runs.
Rice scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 5-3 lead.
Mattlage and Geisler each had two hits for the Bobcats.
Texas State is 25-27, while Rice is 34-17. The Bobcats will end their regular season this weekend at Bobcat Ballpark with three games against Dallas Baptist. The Bobcats, third place 14-10 in the Western Athletic Conference, still have a very slim chance of taking the league’s regular season title.
