Whatever the Texas State baseball team ran into before the Western Athletic Conference season began, the Bobcats might be better off for it.

The tough Texas State schedule, generally ranked in the thirties in various RPI rankings, has enabled the Bobcats to handle the WAC early on. The Bobcats swept three games at home during the weekend against Seattle, improving to 5-1 in the league for first place. Overall, the Bobcats improved to 12-15.

Texas State won on the opener on March 28, 4-3, scoring three times in the fifth inning. Ben McElroy drove in two runs with a fifth-inning double. Starting pitcher Taylor Black allowed only four hits in 7 1/3 innings, improving his record to 2-3.

The Bobcats also took early control in the middle game the next day, scoring five times in the fourth inning on their way to a 7-5 win. Cody Lovejoy and Colby Targun each drove in two runs for the Bobcats.

Seattle scored three times in the first inning of the final game on March 30, but the Bobcats took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the third inning and went on to a 6-4 win. Lovejoy had two hits and Garrett Mattlage drove in two runs for Texas State.

The Bobcats go back on the diamond tonight at Rice (6:30 p.m.). The Owls, 20-10, are a top 20 team in three of the four major polls.
