Texas rallies to beat baseball Bobcats

The Texas State baseball team put up a fight Tuesday night, but Texas scored two late runs for a 5-3 win in Austin. Texas improved to 15-9 with the victory, while Texas State fell to 9-15.

The Longhorns opened the game with three runs in the first inning, putting Texas State into a fast hole.

A two-run double by Morgan Mickan in the third inning brought the Bobcats within 3-2.

In the fourth, Cody Lovejoy was hit by a pitch to lead off, then took second on a single by Ben McElroy. Nick Smelser reached first base on a fielder’s choice, advancing Lovejoy to third. When Texas pitcher Kirby Bellow threw a wild pick-off throw on Smelser, Lovejoy scored from third, putting the game into a 3-3 tie.

However, Texas scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a 5-3 lead. The Bobcats couldn’t get the tying run on base in either of their last two innings.

Texas State moves back into Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Seattle at Bobcat Field. The series will open Friday at 6:30 p.m.
