The San Marcos High School girls basketball team went back into the win column Friday night with a victory on the road.
The Rattlers prevailed, 52-51, in overtime at New Braunfels Canyon. The win makes San Marcos 2-5 in District 25-5A and 8-21 overall. Canyon is 3-4 and 15-9.
The win put San Marcos suddenly in the hunt for a playoff berth. Though the Rattlers are in fifth place out of six teams, they are only one game out of third, which is shared between Canyon and Smithson Valley. The top four teams will go to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) playoffs.
The Rattlers will play at home on Feb. 5 against Smithson Valley. Their other two remaining games are at last-place New Braunfels and at home against first-place Judson.
The second half Friday night was tight throughout. Defenses really took over after the Rattlers held a 39-37 lead through three quarters. Canyon scored to an 11-9 advantage in the fourth to force the game into overtime at 48-48. The Rattlers outscored Canyon, 4-3, in overtime.
Bailey Hill scored 17 points to lead San Marcos, for which Shannon Mathis added 13 points. Jackie Schaake led Canyon with 14 points.Email | Print
