SMHS girls hoop squad hopes to rally from tough loss

STAFF REPORT

The San Marcos High School girls basketball team will return home Tuesday night smarting from a tough loss. The Rattlers’ Tuesday opponent, New Braunfels Canyon, is smarting from a tough loss, too.

The Rattlers fell, 62-15, at San Antonio Wagner on Jan. 4 after falling behind, 26-7, at the end of the first quarter. The Rattlers now are 6-18 overall and 0-1 in District 25-5A. Wagner is 1-0 and 20-5.

An indication of the Rattlers’ youth is that they were led in scoring by two sophomores, Bailey Hill with five points and Shannon Mathis with four.

On that same night, Canyon was creamed at home, 51-16, by Converse Judson. But the Cougars, 0-1 in the district, are 15-8 overall.

The Bobcats and Canyon will tip off at 7 p.m. at San Marcos High School. Following that game, the Rattlers will go to Smithson Valley on Friday night (7 p.m.).
