George Strait Anniversary
When George Strait was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006, Kent Finlay put a handwritten sign out front of Cheatham Street Warehouse. It read, “I told you so.”
Ace in the Hole band took the stage at the venerable San Marcos honky-tonk for the first time on October 13, 1975. Their lead singer was a Southwest Texas State student named George Strait. It was a free show.
Ace in the Hole started a weekly gig there and soon was popular in surrounding cities, too. In 1977, Finlay and Strait loaded up the warehouse’s cargo van and struck out for Nashville.
“George kept on getting more and more attention, and finally Erv Woolsey, who worked at MCA Records, got the powers that were there at the time to take a chance on George – and of course, you know what happened. George Strait and his Ace in the Hole band became the most successful country act in history,” Finlay said.
By the time Strait had outgrown his regular Cheatham Street gig, a young Stevie Ray Vaughn had started playing Tuesdays. For a while, Stevie Ray Vaughn and George Strait were both playing weekly gigs at the venue.
Finlay says the next artist to move from unknown to up-and-coming may be singer songwriter Tessy Lou Williams, who is playing at Cheatham Street tonight with The Hems.
