Texas Tech threatens to cancel Texas State game

Texas Tech officials are thinking about canceling their Sept. 8 game versus Texas State University rather than have it air on ESPN’s Longhorn Network, is reporting.

The website cited an unnamed athletic department source as saying Tech is “adamantly opposed to playing on the Longhorn Network” and is “putting serious consideration into canceling the game.”

“We are extremely disappointed,” the source told, which is part of the Yahoo! network. “Our hope is that the Texas State game will be played on a primary ESPN platform.”

ESPN announced in June that it would air the game but didn’t say on which of its channels. The matchup is scheduled to be Texas State’s first home game of the season, following the opener Sept. 1 at University of Houston.

Tech athletics administration has had an aversion to the Longhorn Network since it launched nearly a year ago. During the 2011 season, Tech refused to let the network broadcast its conference game against the University of Texas on the Longhorn Network, the website reports.

  1. I thought I heard that this was sorted out, and the game would not be on the Longhorn Network. I suppose anything can happen, between now and 9/8.

  2. Do we have an athletic director? Maybe we should get one though that knows what it is really like playing with the big boys. We are not in div II or IAA anymore TOTO.

  3. As the home team, I believe TxSt has the right to choose where the game is aired. Tech knows that if they make noise, we’ll officially object to ESPN airing it on LN and the game will end up on ESPN3 or ESPNU instead.

  4. @Craig
“Screw you TU” You are a moron and couldn’t get into the University of Texas if your Dad was the president of the University or the the United States. May your ignorance, although abundant, practice a reasonable amount of containment.

  5. Is TT becoming the new aggy? The Dust People of Tech has always been known as the whiners of the high plains, but the aggy outranked them until this year. Now that the farmers have moved on to meet their new destiny in the SEC slaughterhouse, Tech can move front and center. Perhaps they should take TSU’s old spot in Division II until they grow up.

  6. I’ve seen some Twitter traffic from suggesting that the game will not air on Longhorn Network and so is resolved. We’ll check on it on Monday and update the story if true.

  7. We’re expecting some kind of statement from the Western Athletic Conference on this but a Texas State athletics department source tells us the Tech-Texas State game will be aired on ESPN3, not the Longhorn Network.
