Bobcat pole vaulter advances to NCAA championships

AUSTIN — Junior vaulter Logan Cunningham qualified for his third straight national championship Saturday afternoon at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin.

Cunningham finished with a height of 5.40 meters (17-08.50) to finish fourth in a field of 48 competitors.

Cunningham cleared the bar on his second attempt at the 5.40-meter mark to join just three former Bobcats (Charles Austin, Becky Collins and Brian Veal) who have made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championships. On the day, he was four for five on attempts.

“I can’t say enough about the kid,” said head coach Dana Boone. “He has been great and very consistent for us all year. We’re very proud of him and hope he does well at the national championships.”

In the sprints, sophomore James Johnson finished his season in the 200 meters with a time of 21.06 to place 21st. Joining Johnson in the men’s 4×100-meter relay were Timothy Young, William Murray and Brandon Thomas, who ended their record-breaking season with a time of 40.54 to finish 17th. The team bettered two school records during the year with a season-best time of 40.15 at the Texas State Invitational in April.

On the women’s side, the 4×100-meter relay team of Alexus Hebert, Franchelle Hill, Daniela Anane-Bediakoh and Courtney Miller ended the year with a 16th-place finish of 45.65, their second-best time of the season. The 4×400-meter relay team of Morgan Canty, Kellie Trinkaus, Hayley Helfenbein and Chante’sean White ended the day for the Bobcats, taking 24th with a time of 3:45.39 to finish their season.

Cunningham will compete 4 p.m. Friday, June 8 in Des Moines, Iowa, at Drake Stadium as he goes for his first national title.
