Updated: I-35 reopened after vehicle fire shutdown

A reader, Aaron Gadberry, sent us this video of the vehicle fire on Interstate 35 in Buda today.

I-35 has been reopened after authorities this afternoon closed the interstate due to a vehicle that was fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities at about 4:26 p.m. today responded to a vehicle fire call between Buda and Kyle that shut down Interstate 35.

The burning van, driven by an elderly man, was located near Exit 217.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and fire fighters are working at extinguishing the fire,” said Jeff Jordan, Hays County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. “The vehicle fire was not caused by an accident. The male subject was the only known occupant, and he exited the van safely.”

Jordan said emergency medical services personnel are checking the van’s driver for injuries.

“There are no other injured parties or damaged vehicles,” Jordan said.

Agencies that responded to the incident included Buda Police Department, Buda Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
