Emily Gonzalez, a student at Miller Middle School, won first place in a Veterans Day essay contest and received a $500 savings bond.

The competition, hosted by the Austin Retired Chiefs Society, involved all the schools from Hays, Comal, and Travis counties, according to Iris Campbell, San Marcos CISD spokesperson.

The topic of the essay contest was “What Veterans Day Means to Me.” Gonzalez will be afforded the opportunity to read her essay on the steps of the state capitol building Friday morning during Austin’s Veterans Day celebration.

Gonzalez wrote the essay as part of San Marcos CISD’s Gifted and Talented program. She is the daughter of Lori Gonzalez (a math teacher at Miller) and her Gifted and Talented teacher is Elizabeth Deming.
