Election 2011: Jones ousted from San Marcos council

STAFF REPORT

Texas State career adviser Chris Jones was ousted from his seat on the San Marcos City Council in Tuesday’s election, drawing 970 votes (45.9 percent) to retired banker Wayne Becak’s 1,142 (54.1 percent).

Jones, the most senior current council member, was seeking a third term for the Place 4 seat he first won in 2005 as a Texas State University student.

Meanwhile, small business owner John Thomaides, a former veteran council member, maintained a comfortable lead in a four-man field for open Place 3 seat.

Seeking a return to council after losing a race for mayor last year, Thomaides drew 947 votes (44.25 percent) and setting up a runoff election with retired police Cmdr. Terry Nichols, who won 712 votes (33.27 percent). Toby Hooper won 271 votes (17.34 percent) and Texas State student Nicholas Cubides won 110 voes (5.1 percent).
