Volunteers are being sought to cleanse the San Marcos River and its associated parks of trash on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Those who wish to sign up for the annual fall river cleanup may do so starting at 9 a.m. at the Lion’s Club Tube Rental facility in City Park, where free coffee and breakfast tacos will be provided. Burgers will be provided for lunch. DC Shoes is offering river cleanup participants 20 percent off one item at its Tanger Outlets location in San Marcos.
Volunteers may join river park cleanup teams on foot or teams canoeing the river, creeks and tributaries. TG Canoes will donate boats, paddles, and life jackets for those with water craft skills. Participants using the donated boats are asked to devote several hours to river cleanup.
The last river cleanup was March 5 and involved 275 volunteers, according to the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Division. Volunteers collected 4,500 pounds of trash and debris and 3,000 pounds of reused or recycled materials.
Those with groups that wish to participae in Saturday’s river cleanup are asked to notify the city promptly so enough food is provided for volunteers. Heather Powdrill, the city’s Keep San Marcos Beautiful coordinator, may be reached at (512) 393-8420 or email@example.com.
“It should be a nice cool day to work outside and take care of our beautiful river,” said Dianne Wassenich, San Marcos River Foundation executive director.
Wassenich encourages river cleanup volunteers to wear tie-on tennis shoes rather than flip-flops or sandals. Participants are advised to wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid being scratched by vegetation or exposed to poison ivy. Volunteers are asked to recycle clean, discarded cans and bottles.
