Filing opens for San Marcos council election


The San Marcos City Council adopted an ordinance on Tuesday which called the November election and established early voting and Nov. 8 polling places.

Those interested in serving as council members may acquire candidate packets from the City Clerk’s office at 630 East Hopkins Street. Filing for San Marcos City Council Place 3 and Place 4 will begin Aug. 8 and continue through Sept. 7 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Important election dates:

  • Aug. 8: First day for candidates to file for Place 3 or Place 4 on the ballot
  • Sept. 7: Last day for candidates to file
  • Sept. 9: First day to apply for ballot by mail
  • Sept. 12: Drawing for place on the ballot
  • Sept. 13: Last day for write-in candidates to declare for general election
  • Sept. 16: Last day for candidates to withdraw
  • Oct. 11: Last day to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election; deadline for first candidate contributions/expenditures report, if opposed
  • Oct. 24: First day of early voting
  • Oct. 31: Second candidate report of campaign contributions/expenditures due
  • Nov. 1: Last day to apply for ballot by mail
  • Nov. 4: Last day of early voting
  • Nov. 8: Election Day
  • Nov. 16: Canvass of election returns
