Governor appoints Narvaiz to unfunded mandates taskforce

Former San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz has been named to Gov. Rick Perry’s taskforce on unfunded mandates.

The panel, which includes Houston Mayor Annise Parker and El Paso Mayor John Cook, is charged with making recommendations to the governor on how to help cities, counties and school districts pay for requirements imposed by state legislators.

“As we look for ways to streamline government and ensure the most prudent use of taxpayer dollars, we should also ensure we are not burdening local authorities with unfunded mandates as they face their own budget challenges,” Perry said.

Other taskforce members include Comal County Sheriff Bob Holder, Houston city council member Mike Sullivan, Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos, Collin County Judge Keith Self, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon and Hudson ISD Superintendent Mary Ann Whiteker.

Unfunded mandates been on the minds of local elected officials lately as lawmakers look for ways to make up for an anticipated revenue shortfall of $20 billion or more over the next two years.
