SMHS junior wins first chair in choir competition

Sam Heaton may be the first San Marcos High School student to win a first chair in area auditions.

Sam Heaton, a junior at San Marcos High School (SMHS), has earned 1st Chair, Bass 2, in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All State Mixed Choir for 2011.

San Marcos CISD Public Information Officer Iris Campbell said Heaton may be the first SMHS choir student to place in the first chair position at area auditions.

“This has been a really long process that started in July, and is now complete,” said Helen Miers, SMHS Director of Choirs. “Sam is one of thousands of students who auditioned, and he is part of a very unique, highly regarded group of talented students who are proud to be called Texas All-State Choir members.”

This past fall, Heaton was awarded a medal for Outstanding Performance at the UIL competition’s State Solo/Ensemble Contest. He was one of only 231 students selected from more than 22,000 who performed at that level of state competition.

Heaton attended the seven-week University of Texas-Butler School of Music Young Artist Program in opera in the summer of 2010. He was invited to join the Texas State University Choir when it performs Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”  in the Athens Olympic Stadium this summer.
