The San Marcos Academy (SMA) boys basketball team held San Juan Diego scoreless in the first quarter and cruised to a 55-27 home court victory Wednesday night.
The win improved the Bears, ranked second statewide among private schools, to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in their district.
SMA scored the game’s first 11 points and held a 21-4 lead at halftime.
Despite the big halftime lead, the Bears could have easily led by much more.
“Today was one of those games where nothing was falling for us in the first half,” SMA assistant coach Earl Thomas said. “We shot terrible at the free throw line, missing 15 free throws during the first half, which we normally don’t miss in an entire game. Our defense helped us out tonight, and really showed up the entire game, especially during the first half.
The Bears will play again Friday night at Halletsville Sacred Heart (8 p.m.).
