It’s Geography Awareness Week, and the students at Irene K. Mendez Elementary School recently held a poster contest in conjunction with the event.

The theme for Geography Awareness Week in 2010 is “Fresh Water is Life.”

Students in different grade levels created posters for the contest. The first place winners include first-grader Purvi Weerasinghe, second-grader Ben Summers , third grader Jisela Sierra, fourth grader Micaela Gutierrez, and fifth grader Edith Allmand.

Second place winners include third grader Lucy Allmand, a tie with fourth graders Kiarra Ortiz and Cassandra Ramos, and a tie with fifth graders Brandon Alverado and Zoe Zeva.

Mendez teacher Brenda Butler said that two student posters will advance to the next round of competition. Ben Summers is the Kindergarten-second grade advancing winner and Edith Allmand is the third-fifth grade advancing winner.

The posters of Summers and Allmand were sent on to district competition.

All of the other posters will be on display in the campus hallways throughout Geography Awareness Week this week.

Geography Awareness Week was established as the third week in November in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan with the goal of promoting geographic awareness in the schools and among the general public.
