The San Marcos City Council selected Gonzales City Secretary Jamie Lee Pettijohn Monday to fill the city’s vacant city clerk position.
Councilmember Fred Terry said Pettijohn will probably indicate whether she will accept the city’s offer on Tuesday.
The city clerk position became available after Sherry Mashburn took a job with the city of College Station and began her duties there in August.
The city council hired Kay Stroman to find candidates for the positions of city clerk and city manager position, the latter of which was recently filled by Round Rock City Manager Jim Nuse. Terry said Stroman collected at least 20 applications for the city clerk position.
“She narrowed it down to six and we went through those six, and additionally narrowed it down to four for interviews,” Terry said. “One of those four, one declined to go through interviews, so it was actually three that we interviewed. And the first person that we chose did not accept our offer, and Ms. Pettijohn was our second choice.”
Terry said that if Pettijohn she takes the job, she will likely begin her duties in the first or second week in December, which is about when Nuse will start work.
Terry said Pettijohn holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration and used to hold a position with H-E-B that involved managing about 300 employees in the region of stores assigned to her. The San Marcos city secretary oversees five or six employees, said Terry.
