STAFF REPORT

Hernandez Elementary School will play host to a variety of celebrity volunteers scheduled to read to the students Friday for a Reading Heroes Celebration.

The celebrities include Clifford the Big Red Dog, Sparky the Firedog and H-E-Buddy. In addition, other “reading heroes”  include staff from the Texas House of Representatives, judges, county commissioners, police, sheriff, emergency medical services and fire department staff.

Members of Texas State’s baseball team, personnel from the San Marcos Public Library, eleven students from the Gary Job Corps and volunteers from A+ Federal Credit Union and H-E-B are also slated to read.

Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favorite story book and will form a Reading Heroes Celebration parade at 2 p.m. Austin’s PBS affiliate, KLRU-TV, has donated more than 500 books to the school and reporters from their news department will be on hand to read to the students.

In addition, local doctors, business owners and staff from San Marcos CISD also will join the day.

The library will also feature a special presentation with Janice McCurry, author of Rena Ringleader and the Rumor Queen and other books. Rena Ringleader and the Rumor Queen was illustrated by Hernandez first grade teacher Mary Garibay.
