Austin man faces long stint on 18 child sex counts

An Austin man faces 25 years to life in prison on 18 different counts of child sexual assaults after pleading guilty to all counts on the morning of his jury trial.

The sentences are lengthened because Jimmy Duran Lopez pled true to allegations that he had been convicted of two previous felonies.

Lopez, 37, pled guilty Thursday morning to all 18 counts in the Texas 207th District court. Lopez pled guilty to 13 counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and five counts of sexual assault of a child. The Hays County District Attorney’s Office said the abuse started when the child was eight years old and spanned a period of six years.

District Judge Jack Robison set the case for a punishment hearing on Sept. 13, when he will assess punishment and determine whether Lopez will serve the 18 sentences consecutively or concurrently.

The case is being prosecuted by Hays County Assistant District Attorneys Cathy Compton and Amy Lockhart.
