San Marcos officials announce traffic snags through Saturday

Following are the road and street projects affecting traffic in San Marcos for the this week (August 8-14) as announced by the City of San Marcos.

Cheatham Street: Open to through traffic, but construction will continue on Haynes Street from Riverside Drive to Cheatham Street and on Rio Vista Drive and McKinnon Street, both from Haynes Street to Cheatham Street, to install storm sewer, water and wastewater lines. Motorists need to be aware of various street closures until further notice. This is part of the Rio Vista Terrace neighborhood improvement project. Comanche Street: Student Center Drive to Thomas Street is closed for construction of an underground utilities extension. A portion of Student Center Drive will be closed between Comanche Street and Gaillardia Street. A temporary access road from Comanche Street through Parking Lot #201 will provide two-way traffic flow between Student Center Drive and Comanche Street. Construction will continue through Saturday. Motorists are advised to use caution through the construction area. Call Texas State at (512) 245-8691. Also, the four-way intersection at Comanche Street and West San Antonio Street is closed to all through traffic from Aug. 2-11 for water line construction. Traffic will be detoured to West Hopkins Street, South Guadalupe Street, West Martin Luther King Drive, North Street, Harvey Street, Nance Street and West San Antonio Street to provide access to Comanche Street and avoid the intersection. Work will progress on Comanche Street from West San Antonio Street to West Hopkins Street with periodic lane closures. Construction on the water line project will continue through August. Craddock Avenue: Construction on the Craddock Avenue extension from Bishop Street to Wonder World Drive will continue through August. The intersection of Bishop and Craddock is open, but future closure is anticipated for final overlay, milling and striping. Motorists should watch for heavy construction equipment at Wonder World Drive, Bishop Street and the park road at the end of Franklin Drive. Access to Purgatory Creek will be limited at the Craddock Avenue intersection. Call the city’s public services department at (512) 393-8036.

Downtown Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements: Construction has begun on many of the handicap ramps throughout the downtown area. Lanes will be closed, but the streets will remain open. Scheduled for completion at the end of summer. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

East McCarty Lane: Both lanes are closed in each direction from the Interstate-35 frontage road to Old Bastrop Highway until the completion of a gas line construction project. Local access for residents will remain but school, postal, emergency and other motorists will be detoured to use Clovis R. Barker Road or Centerpoint Road. Construction of additional lanes began in April with scheduled completion in November. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Guadalupe Street: University Drive to the Interstate-35 frontage road will have periodic evening lane closures for road improvements. The project runs through Aug. 20, from 8 p.m.–6 a.m., due to pavement repair, seal coat, overlay and striping. Call the Texas Department of Transportation at (512) 353-1061.

Harris Hill Road: The north end will be closed for repair and resurfacing between the North Point subdivision and Yarrington Road until Friday. Motorists will be detoured to SH 21. Call the Hays County Road Department at (512) 393-7385.

Old Bastrop Highway (CR 266): One lane at a time will be closed through Monday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. to pave and resurface between Staples Road (FM 621) and SH 123. Call the Hays County Road Department at (512) 393-7385

Purgatory Park access off of Franklin Drive: Closed through August. Park access will be available following the completion of the Craddock Avenue extension. Persons interested in accessing the park will need to approach from RR 12 or Hunter Road down Wonder World Drive and turn at the Craddock intersection. River Road loop: The road behind the former location of the Chuck Nash auto dealership will be closed for Hays CISD bus training on August 18, from 5:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. School buses will be used as barricades and signage. Call Hays CISD at (512) 268-8479.

San Antonio Street: Traffic is closed on the 100 block from North LBJ Drive to the alley every Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for the Farmer’s Market on the Square. Call the city’s Main Street program at (512) 393-8430.
