STAFF REPORT
San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz, who has not yet said publicly if she will run for re-election, is expected to make an announcement on the subject today.
Narvaiz previously told the Mercury that she would announce her intentions on Aug. 18 but a well-place source said early this afternoon that she has changed her plans and will state her intentions today.
I speculated in this blog last week that her near-empty campaign war chest was likely a sign that she would not seek a fourth term. It sounds like I may very well have misread the tea leaves. UPDATED 2:43 p.m.: I was right the first time; she’s not running, according to an e-mail she just sent supporters.
Council member John Thomaides and former council member Daniel Guerrero have already announced bids for the city’s top elected office.
UPDATED 4:15 p.m.: Narvaiz’s statement on not seeking re-election is here.
