San Marcos CISD to observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

San Marcos CISD will observe Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on July 14, joining with neighboring Central Texas school districts in observing the day.

District employees are encouraged to bring their children to work with them on the day in order for their progeny to learn about the parent’s job duties. The day was designed for students to connect with adult responsibilities and learn about their parent’s role at work and within the community.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work day has hit a few snags in its 17-year history. Originally started by author-feminist Gloria Steinem in 1993 as Take Our Daughters to Work Day, it has grown to encompass both daughters and sons. It was recognized as such by the United States Senate on March 18.

Although the day allotted for the event is April 22, school districts across the country in every state implored parents and employees to keep their children in school that day so that the students would not miss out on important testing and school curricula.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recommended that area school districts coordinate in developing a common date for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day that would not interfere with instruction in the classroom. Each area of Texas was allowed to choose its own day to participate in the event.
