San Marcos CISD trustees joined with representatives of SOAR’s literacy campaign at this week’s school board meeting.
The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees joined Seeking Opportunities, Achieving Results (SOAR) in an early literacy campaign at this week’s school board meeting. The 2010 SOAR campaign is called “Early Readers Become Leaders.”
Throughout the month of July, SOAR is hoping to collect books for children between the ages of one and six years old with collection barrels placed in various locations throughout the city for easy donation. A representative of SOAR announced at the school board meeting that Half-Price Books has pledged to donate 3,000 books this year and that the drive has found a company willing to make the bags for book distribution.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 68 percent of low-income fourth graders cannot read or write at the proficient level. There is a 90 percent chance that a poor reader at the end of first grade will be a poor reader a the end of fourth grade. A majority of reading problems can be prevented in preschool and before by just allowing children access to a variety of books and reading.
Last year, SOAR distributed 1,000 book bags filled with new or gently used books to economically disadvantaged households. This year, the goal is 2,000 bags of books for distribution. Donations for book purchases and to cover the cost of book purchases will be accepted.Email | Print
