Hays County emergency workers are on the scene at Five Mile Dam just south of Kyle, searching for the body of a young man believed to have drowned in the Blanco River this afternoon.
Witnesses say Buda resident Jesus “Chuey” Renteria, 19, was swimming across the river several hundred years north of the dam at about 4:45 when he began to struggle and slipped under the water. About six to eight onlookers dove into the water in an attempt to save him, but were unable to find him in the nearly 20 feet deep water.
Divers with the Kyle Fire Department arrived on scene to search for Renteria. By about 6 p.m., still unable to locate any signs of the young man, law enforcement officials shut down the entire park in order to widen the search, displacing a crowd of hundreds celebrating Father’s Day by the river.
The Blanco River has claimed a number of victims in recent years. Most recently, 34-year-old kayaker Ian Townsend drowned this January near Wimberley.
