Mayor's team wins LBJ Museum tourney

A team fielded by San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz won the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos Golf Tournament on June 12. The team included Jerry Garcia, Gary Gilbert, Daniel Gibson and Mike Narvaiz.

A four-person team fielded by San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz captured first place with a low score of 57 at the eighth annual Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos Golf Tournament on June 12 at Quail Creek Country Club.

Playing on the mayor’s winning team were husband Mike Narvaiz, Jerry Garcia, Gary Gilbert and Daniel Gibson. The team posted a score of 57.

Second place went to CenturyLink’s team, composed of Domingo Medina, Luke Wester, Ronnie Saathosf and Noe Alvarado. John Clarke’s Farm Bureau Insurance team, with Clarke and teammates Robert Shroyer, Darrell Beakley and Mike Tate, was third for the second straight. Both teams posted 59s.

The self-titled “Dead Last” team, which scored a 70, wasn’t last. That honor went to Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) General Manager Juan Garza’s team that posted a 72. Coincidentally, PEC’s board of directors elected to replace Garza days later.

Insurance Agency of San Marcos’ Connie Fite won the closest to the pin award in the women’s division. In the men’s division, Butler Manufacturing Company’s Darby Howle won closest to the pin.

Dead Last’s Michelle Stern won the longest drive in the women’s division, while Philips-San Marcos Operations golfer Gilbert Luera had the longest drive in the men’s division.

Seventeen teams participated in the museum fundraiser, which was dedicated to the memory of long-time museum board member Ed Cable who passed away in November of 2009. Cable started the tournament.

Playing for the first time were the mayor’s team, a City of San Marcos Community Service team, Dead Last, Blanco River Village Bigelow Homes and a team from the Austin law firm of Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Simpson LLP.

Receiving special recognition at the tournament were silver sponsors Ted Breihan Electric Company, Lupe Carbajal and Associates, CenturyLink, Elliott Electric Supply Company. Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Simpson LLP; and San Marcos Local News.

Although they did not field a team, the children of Ed Cable were gold sponsors for the tournament.

LBJ Museum Board President Pat Murdock made special presentations to Quail Creek Country Club’s John Ferguson, Jr., who provided guidance during the planning and conduct of the tournament, and Hays County Precinct 1 Constable David Peterson, who provided the barbecued chicken for lunch.

“We are indebted to Quail Creek Country Club and its staff – particularly John Ferguson, Jr. – for helping make the tournament a success,” Murdock said. “Tournament Director Theresa Schwartz and I are non-golfers, so we needed more than a little advice. We are also indebted to David Peterson for providing the barbecued chicken.”

Peterson has promised brisket for up to 100 golfers next year.
