Smith invited to try out for Team USA, named to region team

Texas State pitcher Carson Smith continues to be rewarded for his fine first season with the Bobcats.

After receiving an invitation to try out for Team USA, Smith was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) South Central Region First Team and will now be on the ballot for ABCA All-America consideration.

The lone underclassman starting pitcher to be so recognized this year, Smith is the fifth player in Bobcats history to receive first team all-region accolades. The sophomore could become just the third Texas State player ever to earn ABCA All-America recognition.

Smith has received Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year accolades this season after posting a 10-4 record and 3.10 earned run average. He struck out 94 batters while throwing six complete games, including three shutouts. Smith also contributed in relief, making 11 appearances out of the bullpen and notching three saves.

The three shutours tied the 6-foot-5 right-hander for the highest single-season total in Texas State history. His 10 wins tied him for fourth most in single-season history, while his 94 strikeouts are the 10th most in a season.

A year ago, Kane Holbrooks and Paul Goldschmidt were each named First Team All-Region, and both went on to earn Third Team All-America honors.
