San Marcos High School currently sits at 2601 East McCarty Lane, but the 2010 outgoing senior class would like to change that. After traveling to other area high schools for games and tournaments, some SMHS seniors noted that many schools are on roadways bearing their mascot name. Hays High School, for example is on Jack C. Hays Trail.

Some of the senior class would like to see SMHS on “Rattler Road.” But how could they proceed to change the name of the road?

First the senior class officers talked with campus administrators, who encouraged their efforts. Step number two was meeting with San Marcos CISD Superintendent Patty Shafer and school trustees at the board meeting, where the seniors received their approval. The next stop on the road to change the road name was meeting with the San Marcos Planning and Zoning (P & Z) Commission, which they did this week.  Mike Horton, San Marcos CISD’s Director of Facilities Construction, said the seniors were given the green light to proceed as the commission approved the request.

Class of 2010 sponsor Lacye Odam went with the seniors to the P&Z meeting.

“They’ve asked for the name change to take place from where McCarty intersects Old Bastrop Road to the dead end at the corner of the high school parking lot,” said Odam. ” If the road is ever extended to Highway 123, we’re hoping the name will go with it.”

Odam said that the senior class officers wanted the name change to be their “senior gift” reflecting Rattler pride and school spirit.

The next step is to go before the San Marcos City Council, and, if approved, on to a meeting with Hays County officials.
