Texas State’s baseball team moved into first place in the Southland Conference all by itself Thursday night as Carson Smith pitched a four-hit shutout in a 10-0, run-rule win against Texas-Arlington (UTA) at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats improved to 33-19 overall and, more important, 22-9 in the Southland Conference for a one-game lead over Southeastern Louisiana with two games left in the season. Southeastern Louisiana fell to 21-10 with an 8-5 loss at Northwestern State Thursday.
If the Bobcats can win the remaining two games of their series against UTA this week, they will win the Southland Conference for the second straight season. However, Southeastern Louisiana holds the tiebreaker if the two teams finish in a tie after winning the head-to-head series between the two leaders April 16-18.
Smith struck out five and walked no one as he improved his record to 9-3.
The Bobcats scored six times in the sixth inning to blow the game open as Kyle Livingstone hit a three-run homer. Livingstone finished the night three-for-four with five RBI.
The Bobcats will play UTA again Friday night (6:30 p.m.) at Bobcat Field. The series, and the regular season, will end Saturday, when the Bobcats and UTA meet again at 1 p.m.
