Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) award winners proudly display their work.
STAFF REPORT
Earlier this week, the San Marcos CISD Trustees took a look at some of the award winning artwork on display from San Marcos High School (SMHS) artists who competed in the recent Reflections Fine Arts competition put on by the state-level Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
Chelsey Keeter and Lizzy Hoffman both earned honorable mention awards in that contest. Keeter’s award was in the visual arts category and Hoffman’s was in Pphotography. Marcus Cruz also advanced to the state level.
The contest attracted more than 107,000 entries to address the theme, “Beauty is…”
The spring brought more success for SMHS artists earlier this year.
March was National Youth Art Month, during which the Texas Art Education Association honored students by selecting 100 pieces of art from 50 Texas school districts to display in the state captiol. The art work of SMHS student Bridget Brotherton was selected for the honor.
In April, the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition was held at the University of Houston Clear Lake. More than 2,000 state qualifying entries were judged and displayed, with SMHS students Torie Ewald and Courtney Walker earning the All-State artist designations. Ewald had two All-State artworks recognized. All-Area awards were won by Madison Gribbon and Emily Kusisto.
Art teachers at SMHS working with the student artists were Nan Durham and Thom Rogers. Chris Cooper is the senior high VASE director.
Bridget Brotherton’s work was selected for display at the state capitol.
