Softball season ends with title game loss

STAFF REPORT

Texas State ended its softball season Saturday with a 3-2 loss to McNeese State in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game at Bobcat Field.

With the victory, McNeese State claimed the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats end their season with a 27-26 overall record.

“I thought we played a great ballgame,” Texas State coach Ricci Woodard said. “I have no complaints about how we played the entire tournament. I thought McNeese State played a great ballgame, and I thought we did too.”

McKenzie Baack, Jenna Emery, Chandler Hall and Anna Hernandez were named to the all-tournament team for Texas State.

Three doubles by the first four Texas State batters in the bottom of the first led to an early 2-0 lead for the Bobcats. But the Bobcats could score no more.

A two-run home run by McNeese State’s Molly Guidry in the top of the fourth tied the game, then the Cowgirls tacked on their final run after a Bobcat throwing error in the fifth inning.

Hall and Elizabeth Dennis pitched effectively for the Bobcats, allowing just six runs the entire tournament. Hall fanned 14 batters in the tournament in 17.2 innings pitched.

The Bobcats appeared in the conference tournament title game for the seventh time, finishing second for the third time.
