Bobcats win two titles at league track meet

Landon Ferguson and Lisa Bingham won championships for Texas State at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held last weekend at Texas-Arlington (UTA).

Ferguson capturd the men’s title in the pole vault with a vault of 16 feet, 1 3/4 inches. Bingham won the women’s high jump championship with a jump of five feet, 7 3/4 inches. Also scoring in that event for Texas State were Valerie Hancock (fourth), Asiya Iskakova (sixth) and Brooke Hewitt (eighth).

The Bobcats finished third in the meet on the women’s side with 80.5 points, well behind meet champion Stephen F. Austin (201.5 points) and UTA (102.0). It was the first time in ten years that Texas State didn’t finish in the top two at the meet.

The Texas State men finished eighth with 52.5 points. Texas-San Antonio won the men’s meet with 148 points, followed by Stephen F. Austin with 134 points.

The Texas State women’s team scored 16 of its team points in the pole vault, led by Elena Horn, who grabbed second place with a vault of 12-3 1/2. Jennifer Matthews registered the same height for third place, while  Jannah Evans rounded out the group with a seventh place vault of 11-3 3/4.

In the women’s discus throw, Texas State placed three of the top seven.  Katy Hanie earned the bronze medal with a distance of 45.10 meters,  Kelsey Titzman took fourth with a mark of 44.44 meters, and Katherine Bakke recorded a throw of 42.92 meters.

Daniel Schmidt continued to do well as he earned the bronze medal in the men’s discus with a throw of 49.28 meters. Schmidt also finished fifth in the hammer throw at 54.18 meters.
