Actor to keynote Texas State commencement

Emmy Award-winning actor Powers Boothe will be the keynote speaker at one of five commencement ceremonies to be held at Texas State University May 14 and 15 in Strahan Coliseum.

Boothe will speak during the 10 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 15. Degree candidates from the McCoy College of Business Administration and College of Health Professions will attend the Saturday ceremony.

Degree candidates from College of Liberal Arts will attend the 10 a.m. ceremony on Friday, May 14.

Candidates from the College of Education will attend the 2 p.m. ceremony on Friday, May 14.

Candidates from College of Applied Arts and College of Science will attend the 6 p.m. ceremony on Friday, May 14.

Candidates from College of Fine Arts and Communication and University College will attend the 2 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 15.

A Distinguished Alumnus of Texas State, Powers Boothe graduated in 1970 and is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Boothe’s film credits include Sin City, Tombstone, Final Season, U-Turn, Frailty, Navy Diver, Blue Sky, Men of Honor, Sudden Death, Rapid Fire, Extreme Prejudice, The Emerald Forest, Red Dawn and Southern Comfort.

He can be seen this May in the movie MacGruber. Boothe received an Emmy award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Reverend Jim Jones in the television movie Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. Other television movies include True Women, Dalva, Joan of Arc, Attilla the Hun. His television series include 24, Deadwood, and Phillip Marlowe, Private Eye.

He was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame in 2009, is the recipient of the “Golden Boot Award,” and has a star on the Western Walk of Fame in Santa Clarita, Calif.

There are 3,604 Texas State students who are candidates for bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees this fall at Texas State.
