The Texas State softball team holds a one-game lead with one weekend left in the Southland Conference season. And that final weekend doesn’t get any bigger.
The Bobcats will venture to Stephen F. Austin this weekend for a series that will decide the regular season league title. The Bobcats are 19-8 in the league, while Stephen F. Austin is 18-9. No other Southland Conference team is mathematically in play to win the regular season championship.
The Bobcats won two of three against Northwestern State last weekend at Bobcat Field, splitting a Saturday double header before winning the rubber game Sunday.
Sophomore pitcher Chandler Hall performed very effectively during the weekend, though she split her two decisions. The loss came by a 1-0 score in Saturday’s first game, during which Hall pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine in her seven innings. However, both hits came in the sixth inning, and Northwestern State combined them with a sacrifice bunt for the game’s only run.
Hall claimed the win in the Sunday game, allowing one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for a 7-1 Senior Day victory. The victory raised Hall’s record to 16-12. Hall also went one-for-three at the plate with a two-run double. But Jenna Emery was the hitting star for the game, going two-for-three with four RBI, including a three-run homer.
The Bobcats held on to win the middle game, 6-4, to finish the Saturday double header. The Bobcats broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs, keyed by Hall’s two-run double. Northwestern rallied with three runs in the seventh, but Hall came in for a scoreless inning to notch her first save of the year.
Overall this season, the Bobcats are 24-22.
