Bobcats win Northwestern State series, keep league lead

Winning two of three during the weekend against Northwestern State at Bobcat Field, the Texas State baseball team still holds first place in the Southland Conference.

The Bobcats rounded out their series with Northwestern State by winning, 7-3, Saturday, before losing, 8-0, Sunday.

As was the case in Friday’s series opener, Northwestern State took the early lead Saturday before the Bobcats rallied. Texas State broke open a 4-3 lead with three runs in the seventh inning. Shaun Garcia was the hitting star for Texas State, going three-for-four with three RBI. Texas State reliever Fielding Pittman entered the game in the sixth inning and earned the win, improving to 3-0.

The Bobcats were never in Sunday’s game. They trailed, 3-0, after three innings and managed only five hits in the entire game.

Texas State starter Brian Borski lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits as his record fell to 1-6. The Bobcats made three fielding errors in the game to help the Northwestern State cause.

Texas State leads the Southland Conference with a 15-6 record (24-14 overall). Northwestern State is 1 1/2 games back at 13-7 and 26-14, tied with Stephen F. Austin (13-7, 26-12). Southeastern Louisiana is two games down at 13-8 and 30-12.

The Bobcats will play at home Tuesday night against Houston Baptist, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Texas State will play its annual home-and-home series against Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) this weekend. The first two games will be played at Bobcat Field Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.). The series will end Sunday at UTSA (1 p.m.).
