La Feria del Mariachi at Texas State has the reputation of being the best mariachi music festival in Texas. San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz presented a proclamation last week for Feria del Mariachi Week to Texas State’s Mimi Govea, Gloria Velasquez and Sindy Chapa.
Some 300 hundred students, as well as famous Mariachi artists, will be in attendance at the festival competition this year on the weekend of April 30-My 1. Several free concerts are scheduled throughout Feria Del Mariachi Week.
Free concerts include the Hill Country Youth Choir and Mariachi Infantile concert on April 27 at Evans Auditorium at 6:30 p.m., and a promotional performance from Mariachi Nueva Generacion on April 28 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the LBJ Student Center Mall.
The public is also invited to watch the Feria Del Mariachi Competition on April 30 at 7 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum. It is a free event.
The week then culminates with the Feria Del Mariachi concert with the winners of the competition performing at Strahan Coliseum at 7 p.m. on May 1. Honoree Angeles Ochoa will also perform. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for children and students and $15 for preferred seating.
Tickets are available at Victory Cleaners, Taqueria el Charro and The Texas State University School of Music Main Office.
