San Marcos High School softball coach Cathy Stoughton doesn’t like being 1-3 in District 17-4A, but she likes the possibility of changing that after Friday night’s 6-5 loss at home against Lockhart.
Lockhart and Elgin are regarded as the top teams in the district. Indeed, Elgin run-ruled the Rattlers last week. Hays also run-ruled the Rattlers last week, so it was heartening for Stoughton that her players came back competitively against Lockhart. Add in that Lockhart has run-ruled Hays, and Friday’s performance by the Rattlers was doubly encouraging.
“We can hang with any team in the district, and we have to believe that,” Stoughton said. ” … I told them (that) I think we’ve turned a corner.”
The Rattlers will have to prove it on the road next week. They go to Lehman on March 23, then to Manor on March 26.
