The San Marcos Toastmasters will hold their annual Speech and Evaluator’s Contest will take place at the San Marcos Public Library, 625 East Hopkins, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to attend. The event is free of charge. Refreshments will be served.

The first part of the contest is the International Speech Contest. Contestants prepare and deliver five-to-seven-minute original speeches. The event features four seasoned Toastmasters speakers, Margie Brownsberger, Sandra Smith, Don Wilde and Veronique Zehnder Hahn.

“The contests are a great way to achieve personal best,” said Ren Liner, Division Governor & Past-President of the San Marcos Toastmasters. “And this competition gives contestants a fun way of using all the public speaking skills they’ve learned through Toastmasters in a supportive environment. You’ll witness members of our club who have completed different levels in the Toastmasters program, but to compete in this contest they must have made a minimum of 6 prepared speeches from their manuals. You can expect to hear some dynamic speakers presenting thought-provoking topics.”

The second part of the contest is the Evaluation portion. Speech evaluation is taken very seriously at Toastsmasters International.

“Evaluators are encouraged to pay close attention to the speaker’s organizational skills, vocal variation, gestures and body movement and relationship to the audience,” San Marcos Toastmasters President Alan Cameron said. “The goal of the evaluator is to provide the speaker with specific feedback that focuses on what they did well and challenges that remain to be met in future projects.”

Contestants for the evaluation portion of the event include Margie Brownsberger, Michele Galuppo, Sharon Offer, Sandra Smith and Don Wilde.

Each contest’s first-place winners will go on to compete at the Area I-70 contest on March 30. Second-place winners will be awarded special trophies and will also serve as alternates at the I-70 contest if for some reason the first-place winners cannot compete.

The San Marcos Toastmasters meet every Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Saltgrass Steakhouse, 100 East Sessom Drive. Visitors are always welcome.
