Bobcats lose three of four in Tempe

STAFF REPORT

In more ways than one, it was a rainy weekend in Tempe, AZ, for the Texas State softball team.

Rain washed out the Bobcats’ final game of the Littlewood Classic Sunday, leaving the Bobcats with a 1-3 record in the tournament. The Bobcats are 2-7 overall.

Sunday’s rain might have been just as well. The Bobcats were to play Illinois State, which already defeated them, 10-4, two days earlier. Illinois State scored six runs in the third inning against Texas State starter Anne Marie Taylor. Though the Bobcats scored four times in their half of the fourth, Illinois State tacked up another four in the seventh against Texas State reliever Elizabeth Dennis.

The Bobcats’ only win of the tournament came in a 6-1 decision against Rutgers. Texas State pitcher Chandler Hall gave up only five hits and struck out 12 in a complete-game performance. Anna Hernandez hit her second homer of the season for Texas State.

Hall lost, 4-1, the day before to Iowa, allowing three runs in the first inning. After that inning, Hall allowed only one run in her next 12 innings.

Texas State lost its other game of the tournament, 6-3, to Arizona State.

The Bobcats play next weekend at the Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational in Tulsa. They are scheduled against Missouri-Kansas City, South Dakota State, Creighton and Tulsa.

Texas State will return home against Texas-Arlington for a double header to start the Southland Conference season on March 2.
