Playing for their first boys high school basketball playoff appearance in ten years, the Hays Rebels fell Tuesday night at Lehman, 51-45.
Lehman took a 13-6 first quarter lead and stayed about that much ahead until two minutes remained and Hays quickly whittled it to three. But the Lobos held on and succeeded in their spoiler’s role against their Hays CISD rival.
Jonathan Garrion finished the night with 20 points for the Lobos.
“Tonight meant a lot,” Lehman coach Thomas Acker said. “It meant a lot to Lehman High that we could step up.”
The Lobos fell out of playoff contention last week and went to their final game of the season Tuesday hoping they could have something to do with making it the last game of the season for Hays, too.
Hays put itself into a position for a shot at the playoffs with a 60-53 win last week at Elgin. An Elgin loss and a Hays win Tuesday night would have necessitated a playoff game between those two schools for the fourth and final playoff berth from District 17-4A. The Hays loss ended that hope.
Hays and Lehman both finished the season 4-8 in the district.
San Marcos finished the season 8-4 in the district with an 85-53 loss Tuesday night at Del Valle. In two years of the present district alignment, Del Valle won all 24 games, finishing 12-0 this year. Both teams are headed to the playoffs next week.
The Rattlers held to within 31-24 at halftime on their visit to Del Valle, but the Cardinals broke the game with a 23-4 advantage in the fourth quarter.Email | Print
