Always known for its disciplined team defense, the Hays High School girls basketball team opened the state playoffs Tuesday night by holding Magnolia West to 11 second-half points in a 49-28 win at College Station.
The Rebels, 25-9, will play Beaumont Central Friday at a site to be determined.
Angeleigh Davis led Hays with 22 points, while Ashley Rankine threw in another 18 for the Rebels, who return those two players and many others from a group that advanced through the Region III playoffs to the state tournament last year.
