Hays now has the inside track on Lehman for a playoff berth in District 17-4A high school boys basketball.
The Rebels put a 58-39 hurting on last-place Lockhart Friday night, while the Lobos fell, 49-33, to playoff insider Elgin.
As a result, Elgin holds the lead position for fourth place and the final District 17-4A playoff spot at 5-6 in the league, while the Rebels are 4-7 and Lehman is 3-8. The Lehman loss dropped the Lobos out of playoff contention, while Hays can still make it by tying Elgin and, perhaps winning a play-in game.
The top three playoff positions are wrapped up between Del Valle (11-0), San Marcos (8-3) and Manor (8-3). San Marcos finishes its season Tuesday night at Del Valle, while Manor closes out at home against Elgin.
If Elgin loses and Hays wins at Lehman Tuesday, then the Rebels and Elgin would both be 5-7. Because they split their two regular season meetings, Hays and Elgin would have to play in for fourth place in the district. Hays hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2000.
If the Rattlers can hang Del Valle with its first loss in two years of District 17-4A, then they would claim undisputed second place – but only if Elgin beats Manor. San Marcos and Manor split their two games this year.
Hays held Lockhart to 13 points in the first half Friday night for a 31-13 lead at halftime. Hays point guard Brandon Alvarado, who led the Rebels with 15 points, has scored 32 points in his last two games.
Facing a must-win situation Friday night against Elgin, Lehman stayed within 23-19 at halftime and 36-30 after three quarters. But the Lobos couldn’t score in the fourth period and Elgin pulled away with a 16-point victory.Email | Print
