Rattlers wait while Hays, Lehman fight

The San Marcos High School boys basketball team knows it’s in the playoffs now, and even made a dent in the District 17-4A elite Tuesday night with a 67-57 win against Elgin at the Snake Pit.

The Rattlers rallied big in the fourth quarter, which they entered with only a 44-43 lead. Chris Threadgill scored 14 of his team high 20 points in the final quarter to spark the Rattlers’ rally.

Before Tuesday night, Manor hadn’t lost a game to any team except Del Valle in District 17-4A. The Rattlers now are 18-13 overall and 8-3 in the district, holding third place behind Manor, which is 8-2 in the league. Del Valle leads the way at 10-0.

The Rattlers have Friday night off before they finish the regular season next Tuesday at Del Valle, which is 24-5 overall.

The other two local teams in the district remain in a fight for a playoff spot, and they won’t both make it. Hays and Lehman both are 3-7 in the league, one game behind fourth-place Elgin, which is 4-6. The top four teams in the district go to the playoffs.

Hays, which had Tuesday night off, plays at home Friday against Lockhart, which is 0-10 in the district. The Rebels placed themselves back in the playoff race with a 60-53 home win on Feb. 5 against Elgin.

The Rebels will finish their season next Tuesday at Lehman. The Lobos lost to Del Valle, 68-46, Tuesday night.

The Lobos, 7-20 overall, will play Elgin Friday night before finishing their season at home against Hays.
